Passage One

It was evening in early summer, and after our supper Mrs. White Smith climbed the steps of the dike built high along the sides of the river to hold in its water in the rainy season. She did this every day to see how high the river had risen. She knew what the river would do.  One by one the villagers followed her up the dike, and stood staring down at the malicious yellow water; curing along like a lot of snakes; and biting at the high dike banks.
She gazed at the river for a moment. That river- it was full of good and evil together. It would water the fields when it was controlled, but then if it rose an inch above the dike, it would crash through like a roaring dragon. That was how husband had died. He always piled more earth on top of it, but one night, the river had risen and broken through. He had run out of the house, and she had climbed onto the roof with the child and had saved herself and it while he was drowned. Well, they had pushed the river back again behind its dike. Every day she herself walked up and down the length of the dike for which the village was responsible and examined it. The men laughed and said, “If anything is wrong with the dike, Granny will tell us.”
It had never occurred to any of them to move the village away from the river. The Smiths had lived there for generations, and some had always escaped and afterwards had fought the river more fiercely than ever.

5. Both 1 and 2 are correct.

4. Because the government did not let them do so.
5. Because their ancestors would not allow to do so.

Passage Two

Having no language, infants cannot be told what they need to learn. Yet by the age of three they will have mastered the basic structure of their native language and will be well on their way to communicative competence. Acquiring their language is the most impressive intellectual feat. Students of how children learn language generally agree that the most remarkable aspect of this featis the rapid acquisition of grammar. Nevertheless, the ability of children to conform to grammatical rules is only slightly more wonderful than their ability to learn words. It has been reckoned that the average high school graduate in the United States has a reading vocabulary of 80,000 words, whichincludes idiomatic expressions and proper names of people and places. This vocabulary must have been learned over a period of 16 years. From the figures, it can be calculated that the average child learns at a rate of about 13 new words per day. Clearly a learning process of great complexity goes on ata rapid rate in children.

11. What is the main subject of the passage?

1. How to memorize words
2. Communicating with infants
3. Ways of Learning Language

5. Suspected

14. The word "which" refers to………………………….  .

1. their ability
2. learning process
3. reciting vocabulary
4. reading vocabulary
5. idiomatic expression

15. According to the passage, what is impressive about the way children learn vocabulary?

1. They learn words very quickly.
2. They learn even very long words.
3. They gradually learn word by word
4. They learn the most words in high school.
5. They learn words before they learn grammar.

7.ตอบข้อ 5 เพราะจากเนื้อเรื่องจะพบว่า “The river would crash through like a roaring dragon.
That was how Mrs. White Smith’s husband had died.” นั่นคือสิ่งที่แม่น้ำกระทำโดยไหลท่วมเขื่อนและคร่าชีวิตสามีของเธอ จึงตอบข้อ 5 The river would break through again if they were careless.
8.ตอบข้อ 4 เพราะเป็นการเปรียบเทียบการกระทำของงูกับการไหลเชี่ยวของกระแสน้ำ ซึ่งตรงกับคำตอบคือ The pressure of the water on the dike was great หมายความว่า กระแสน้ำที่ไหลท่วมเขื่อนมีความรุนแรง
9.ตอบข้อ 3 เพราะให้ดูจากเนื้อเรื่อง “One night, the river had risen and broken through.
…she had climbed onto the roof …” หมายถึง คืนหนึ่งระดับน้ำได้เพิ่มสูงขึ้นและได้ท่วมสันเขื่อนทำให้เธอต้องปีนขึ้นไปบนหลังคาเพื่อความปลอดภัยของตัวเธอและลูก

13.ตอบข้อ 4 เพราะสังเกตจากประโยค “It has been reckoned that the average high school graduate in the United States has a reading vocabulary of 80,000 words” ได้มีการประมาณการ (reckoned) ว่านักเรียนมัธยมในประเทศอเมริกาโดยเฉลี่ยได้อ่านคำศัพท์ประมาณ 80,000 คำ คำตอบจึงเป็น estimated = ประมาณการ
14.ตอบข้อ 4 เพราะ Which แทนคำที่มาข้างหน้า คือ reading vocabulary
15.ตอบข้อ 1 เพราะสังเกตจากประโยค “Clearly a learning process of great complexity goes on at a rapid rate in children.” เห็นได้ชัดเจนว่ากระบวนการเรียนรู้ภาษาที่ซับซ้อนยังคงมีต่อเนื่องในอัตราที่รวดเร็วในวัยเด็ก
